Garbage Disposal Problems

What do you do if your garbage disposal will not turn on?

Eventually, if not already, you will flip the garbage disposal switch and hear nothing. When this happens, there are several different things you can do to fix it. For starters, you need to keep in mind that garbage disposals are temperamental machines; they are not as durable as most people believe them to be. As such, you don’t want to throw everything under the sun down your kitchen sink drain. If you do this, you will most likely damage your disposal. But, assuming your disposal is already not functioning properly (i.e. not turning on), what should you do?

The first thing you should do is make sure that your disposal is plugged into an outlet. This may seem like a no-brainer, but, theoretically, vibrations from the disposal could shake the plug loose.

If your disposal cord is plugged in, then you should check your breaker box for any tripped breakers.

After checking to make sure your disposal has a source of power, you should hit the reset button on the bottom of the unit.

Once you do this, try and turn it on.

Should the disposal still not turn on, there might be an obstruction inside the hopper — the hole where the food goes. If this is the problem, make sure the disposal switch is in the off position, then try and remove the obstruction with a long utensil.

If, after following all of these steps, the disposal will not turn on, you should call your local plumber to evaluate the situation further.
